To understand neurofeedback, we also need to understand a little about brainwaves.

 

Brainwaves are the electrical impulses produced as your brain cells communicate with one another. Brainwaves tell us a great deal about how we feel and function; our thought habits, stress levels, underlying mood and overall brain function. An optimally functioning brain has the flexibility to change states of attention and arousal. Each situation requires an appropriate mental state. A brain in which there is dysregulation will have difficulty in doing this. It is out of sync with itself. Many disorders and imbalances are a result of a dominance of brainwave frequencies appearing inappropriately from undesirable brain activity.

 

Using sensors on the scalp, brainwave activity is monitored and through sophisticated computer software, it is fed back to the brain in a format it recognises and which the brain can then use to change it’s activity to operate more optimally. 

 

Neurofeedback has no side effects and you do not feel anything when “brain training”. Because it is a learning process, negative information and activity which is no longer re-inforced will not remain.

 

Most of the time we are totally unaware of how our brains function. When we start to use Neurofeedback to improve our quality and experience of life, we can suddenly become aware of how much lighter and freer it feels to function optimally.

What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a process by which the activity of the brain is fed back to itself, so that it can understand and regulate what it is doing and can use that information to change it’s activity to function more optimally. Essentially, Neurofeedback is a way to train brain activity.

 

The activity in your brain determines everything you feel and do. All of our thoughts and beliefs generated throughout our life create the reality we experience. If our brains are conditioned to operate in certain ways, this might not be optimal function for our healthiest and happiest life. 

 

The brain produces essential neurochemicals which play a fundamental role in our everyday function; behaviour, activity, emotions, mood, appetite, cognition, learning and memory to mention but a few. If we experience even only small imbalances in these chemicals, our quality and experience of life can be drastically impaired, even if we otherwise have what is considered “normal brain function”. Many people are using drugs daily to try and correct these imbalances which provide only a temporary change and do not often tackle the root of the imbalance.
